Contessa natural slate

Product catalog summary
Introduction
Cembrit offers a range of natural and man-made slates, including the Contessa natural slate from Spain, available in blue/black and grey. Cembrit is part of the Cembrit Holding A/S Group of Denmark, a major European building material producer.

Specifications
Contessa slates are available in various sizes and are known for their durability and resistance to severe weather conditions. They meet the top classifications for water absorption, thermal cycle resistance, and sulphur dioxide exposure resistance according to BS EN 12326-1:2004.

Quality and Appearance
The slates have a normal texture and are tested for flexural strength and non-carbonate content. They may exhibit oxidization due to iron compounds, which can cause discoloration but does not affect performance.

Design Considerations
Contessa slates should be laid according to BS 5534 standards, considering wind and snow loads. The pitch of the roof and site exposure will determine the slate size, pattern, and fixings. Detailed guidance is provided in BS 5534 and BS 6399.

Planning and Estimating
Wastage should be considered due to natural variations in the rock. Slates must be graded and sorted before installation.

Installation Guidelines
Slates should be stored properly and can be cut and holed on-site. They must be laid in accordance with BS 5534 and BS 8000 standards, ensuring minimal cutting and proper alignment. Nails and hooks should meet specific standards for secure fixing.

Additional Considerations
Ventilation must comply with BS 5250:2002, and lead should be treated with patination oil to prevent staining. A full range of accessories is available from Cembrit.

Sitework Storage and handling Slates should be carefully stacked on their longer edges with timber bearers, battens or boards between layers. The lowest layer must be arranged on a firm level base. Working Slate can be cut and holed on site by hand or machine. Care must be taken to avoid undue spalling. Slates should be holed from the bed towards the face so that the nail-head is accommodated in the small cavity formed by the area of spalling. Individual slates should be holed so that the thicker end is at the tail of the slate. Before fixing, the slates should be sorted into three or four groups...
