STEP 5. Mask and clean the room. 5 Take the time to mask your interiors thoroughly. Determine the order for painting the room. Paint last the areas that are likely to get dripped on. Prime (and paint) the ceilings first, walls second, and trim last. Use painter’s tape to protect door and window frames as well as moldings. Tape off electric fixture and TV fixture plates. STEP 6. Prepare the surface. 6 Proper surface preparation is just as crucial as proper painting practices. The great majority of paint failures are attributed to inadequate surface preparation. Be sure to repair any surface imperfections. Gaps and seams: Fill all cracks and seams with paintable acrylic caulk. Prime the area. Holes: Fill all holes with patching compound. Peeling paint: Scrape or sand any peeling paint. Feather sand to a smooth edge and remove dust. Prime the area. STEP 7. It is time to paint. 7 Stir the paint thoroughly. Prime the roller. Start with the ceiling. Prime the area to promote hide and adhesion. Use a wooden tool to stir the paint. “Prime” the roller before you put it in the primer or paint. Use a roller or a brush to prime the wall.
