Hospitality is now more sustainable and smart with Rialto IoT Technologies Cinzia and Luca are a young and enthusiastic couple who manage the B&B farmstead Sveseri in the province of Trento. They are both very sensitive to customers’ requests, always paying attention to the surrounding environment and territory, and they aim at managing their farmstead as a fully energy sustainable building. With their bright smile, kindness and a hint of curiosity, Cinzia and Luca deal with daily challenges with wit and creativity, looking for the ultimate solution to implement their project of sustainable hospitality. And on the theme of sustainability this couple has clear ideas: they wish to reduce as far as possible the environmental footprint, to reduce wastes, to employ energy from renewable resources and to use local products for catering. It is especially on the theme of energy that the farmstead Sveseri adopted its best technology available for producing clean energy: 8kW solar PV system, solar thermal panels and 30kW wood boiler to produce hot water and to heat the building using only renewable resources. The B&B has been recently improved to provide a private bathroom for each room, but Luca and Cinzia do not wish to stop here: with no hesitation they chose a heating system which manages several local heaters (for rooms and bathrooms) to reduce the wastes, for a convenient use of different temperatures in each area. However, Luca still had a hard problem to solve: how could he manage the heating depending on the number of bookings received, without entering each room in person, switch on the heating and offer a comfortable temperature to his hosts at their arrival? No need to say burning wood to heat rooms beyond real necessity is expensive and against the principles of sustainability the two owners chose for managing their farmstead. Luckily, Luca is also passionate about the digital world and new technologies. Therefore, he first searched a suitable solution in the smart home system, a field he was already familiar with, but installation and maintenance of such systems appeared difficult, and they needed to use the existing cables to command electro-valves, with no intervention on the existing system and no special configuration for internet connection. After lengthy reflexion and research, Luca asked Cinzia’s opinion, who considered those systems too complex and quite expensive; she suggested instead to look up online for a solution ready to use. “Maybe we’ll find something easy and more suitable for us!” Indeed, looking on main e-commerce websites, Luca was happy to find an appropriate solution: wi-fi thermostats directly managed from the App on your smartphone.
