Overview

This document outlines Arper's commitment to sustainable furniture design through its 2025 Selected References collection, emphasizing innovation in materials and a redefined approach to beauty and functionality.

Philosophy and Vision

Arper focuses on creating adaptable spaces that support modern lifestyles while prioritizing sustainability. Their design philosophy values natural quality, meaningful innovation, and environmental responsibility over superficial novelty or perfection.

Material Innovation: Catifa Carta

Catifa Carta is an evolution of the Catifa 53 chair, featuring a shell made from PaperShell—a composite material made from wood by-products and kraft paper bonded with a 100% biogenic hemicellulose-based binder derived from agro-waste or pulp production. This material innovation offers significant environmental benefits:

  • Utilizes kraft paper from Swedish wood production residues, avoiding additional tree cutting.
  • Constructed from 29 layers of paper bonded with a natural biobinder.
  • Durable and versatile, suitable for furniture and other industries like electronics and automotive.
  • Carbon-negative lifecycle: retains CO2 absorbed by trees and can be converted into biochar at end-of-life, preventing CO2 release and enhancing soil biodiversity.

Projects Featuring Catifa Carta

Catifa Carta has been applied in real-world architectural projects such as Tecnica Group HQ in Treviso and The Roof Cooperativa Cortina in Italy, demonstrating its practical and aesthetic viability.

PaperShell, which carries the name of the company itself, is a composite material based on kraft paper and a biobinder. To produce kraft paper, no trees are cut. Crafted from 29 layers of paper bonded with natural resin, the shell retains throughout its lifecycle the CO2 captured by trees, significantly reducing its environmental footprint. The kraft paper is impregnated with a 100% biogenic hemicellulose-based binder from agro-waste streams or pulp and paper production. The impregnated substrates are stacked, pressed and cut into the shell of Catifa Carta. At the end of its life, the shell of Catifa Carta can undergo pyrolysis, a burning process that happens at low temperature and in absence of oxygen avoiding the release of CO2 into the atmosphere....

Redefining Beauty is our intention. We aim for a beauty that embraces natural qualities over perfection, that values care over excess, that seeks meaning over novelty. Far from being merely about appearance, beauty, to us, is a profound and essential force—one that embodies our responsibility, as a brand, towards people and the planet. Beauty is a timeless expression that evolves with integrity, surprising us by revealing itself where we had not yet imagined.
