Introduction to Controlled Ventilation: Modern airtight buildings require controlled ventilation to maintain good indoor air quality. A ground-air heat exchange system utilizes geothermal energy to enhance the efficiency of a building's ventilation system.
Geothermal Energy Benefits: At depths of 5 to 7 feet (1.5 to 2 meters), ground temperatures remain stable year-round. This stability allows for pre-warming of air in winter and pre-cooling in summer, reducing the energy needed for heating and cooling. For instance, in mid-latitude regions, ground temperatures between 45ºF-54ºF (7ºC-12ºC) can adjust intake air temperatures by up to 29ºF (16ºC) in summer and 16ºF (9ºC) in winter.
Energy Efficiency: By narrowing the temperature gap between outdoor and indoor environments, the system reduces the energy required for climate control. It operates with minimal electrical power for an air intake fan and can lead to significant energy savings, especially when paired with heat or energy recovery ventilators (HRV or ERV). This system can also allow for smaller heating and cooling equipment and may eliminate the need for air conditioning in some residential settings.
Heat Exchange Examples: In summer, intake air at 91°F (33°C) can be cooled to 62°F (17°C) using soil temperatures of 50°F (10°C). In winter, intake air at 14°F (-10°C) can be warmed to 30°F (-1°C) with the same soil temperature.
Microbial Growth Inhibition: During high humidity, condensation in pipes can promote microbial growth. The AMVIC ECOAIR system addresses this with condensate drainage and air filtration. Additionally, the pipes have an antimicrobial inner surface with Agion® silver ions, which inhibit microbial growth by releasing ions in the presence of moisture. This feature is tested to ASTM Standard E2180 and registered with the EPA for HVAC use.
