Specifications and Procedures
1. Jointing Pipework: Ensure that materials do not project into the bore of pipes and fittings. For cast iron with flexible couplings, paint the cut ends of pipes. Recoat bare metal on coated pipes after cutting.
2. Electrical Continuity: Use clips or suitable standard pipe couplings for earth bonding to ensure electrical continuity in metal pipes with flexible couplings.
3. Identification of Internal Foul Drainage Pipework: Markings should comply with BS 1710, using integral lettering, self-adhesive bands, or identification clips at specified locations.
4. Discharge and Ventilating Stacks: Terminations should have a perforated cover or cage that does not restrict airflow, using materials like stainless steel, uPVC, or HDPE.
5. Installing Air Admittance Valves: Position valves vertically above the flood level of the highest appliance served, ensuring they are clear of insulation materials.
6. Access for Testing and Maintenance: Install pipework with adequate clearance for testing, cleaning, and maintenance. Position access fittings and rodding eyes to avoid obstruction.
7. Completion and Testing: Provide a minimum of 3 days notice for testing. Ensure pipework is securely fixed and free from obstruction. Fill traps with clean water and supply clean water, assistance, and apparatus for testing. Submit a record of tests.
8. Pipework Airtightness Test: Temporarily seal open ends of pipework and use a 'U' tube water gauge and air pump to test. Maintain a pressure of 38 mm without loss for at least three minutes.
9. Siphonage and Back Pressure Tests: Test WC pans by flushing and other appliances by filling to overflow level. Test each appliance three times, recharging traps before each test.
10. Pre-handover Checks: Remove temporary caps and secure permanent blanking caps, access covers, rodding eyes, and floor gratings.
