KEDGWICK - 1

News Permanent Bridge in Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) Connecting Communities Between Hombo and Bukavu Purchased by the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO), this one-lane Acrow bridge is only 100 feet (30.5 meters) in length, but represents many miles of progress. The bridge was installed to provide vehicular accessibility to a local village, which previously only had footpath accessibility. The construction of this bridge has made medical clinics and schools more accessible to the village of Hombo, which is near the city of Bukavu on the eastern border of DRC with Rwanda. The bridge was opened to traffic in 2012, as part of MONUSCO’s objectives to strengthen the country’s infrastructure to promote the prosperity of its citizens, to support the rule of law and help diminish the influence of local rebel forces.
