PRODUKTNAME LED TECHNOLOGY SEITENTHEMA 5 5 SMD LEDs (Surface Mounted Device LEDs) Chip-on-board LEDs The LED chip is stuck directly onto the circuit board, then wired These are stuck onto the sur- face of the circuit board and then dip soldered. The linear LED circuit board in the KAVA LED luminaire, for example, is fitted with SMD LEDs. up in place and given an epoxy lens, a so-called bubble, which defines the light distribution. Depending on the distinctive characteristics of the bubble, a COB LED can therefore provide narrow-beam or extremely wide- angle light distribution. During product development, the right type of LED must be selected and adapted to suit the luminaire, depending on the application area and lighting technology.

Fluorescent lamp principle or luminescence conversion

A white LED can produce light in two ways: firstly by RGB colour mixing, where the colour triangle is used to produce a neutral, but difficult to define, white. The second common method of producing white light is based on the principle of luminance conversion. A lumi-nescent layer similar to that in a fluorescent lamp is placed above a blue LED chip so that part of the blue light is converted into white light. Depending on the composition of the conver- sion layer material, the colour temperature varies from 3,000 to 8,000 K.
