A spatial sculpture The German pavilion, or “Balancity” – a contraction of balance/equilibrium and city/town – defines itself as the image of a Harmonious City combining diversity and density, modernity and tradition, in response to the Universal Exhibition’s “Better City, Better Life” theme. The textile facade subtly emulates the silk of Chinese umbrellas. Its appearance varies with the changing scenography and climatic conditions. The structure’s physionomy – openwork and printed – alters hour by hour and, when evening falls, a halo of light simulates the heavens. The textile allows the...

A forest of kites Kites or “papalotes” – derived from the Spanish word for a butterfly – are a significant symbol of the shared cultural links between Mexico and China dating back to the conquistadors. Integrating a green area into the Mexican pavilion’s flat roof was a powerful architectural challenge. The upper level of the Mexican pavilion comprises a large grass forecourt, on which the “papalotes” depicting the future of Mexican cities, are erected. The other two levels represent Mexican urban planning’s past (basement level) and its present (pavilion access level). Priority to open...
