| The Bibliotheca was short-listed for the International Award by the British Construction Industry (BCI) and has been a winner of the Quality in Construction International Performance of the Year Award. Chosen as the only architectural metalwork manufacturer to understand the brief, SAS provided products that were hugely challenging geometrically. Working with the architectural consortium Snohetta/Hamza, Balfour Beatty main contractors and AIG roofing contractors, SAS co-designed, manufactured, supplied and gave on site project management to the local labour construction team throughout the build. The ceiling is totally bespoke, over 100 bays of 3mm aluminium panels in seven different ceiling planes. Most of the bull nosed ceiling panels could not be modelled in any Computer Aided Design package, they are hand made. One of the most important elements of the project was the dramatic design of the natural light shaft. Sitting between the roof and ceiling membrane there are countless light shafts that were integral to lighting the interior all manufactured to varying geometric shapes. | |
