Using Solar Power

The whole is betterthan the sum of its parts

Supply of hot water and heating

Solar energy can be used to provide hot water and space heating.Even a small solar heater system can satisfy up to 65% of the annualdomestic hot water requirements of a household. In general, solarsystems are designed so that they can satisfy up to 100% of the hot water requirements in the summer while they will preheat the water inspring and autumn. This means that your conventional hot water boi-ler can be switched off during the summer months. Another interesting aspect is the fact that you can also connect your modern washing machine and modern dishwasher to the hot water circuit. This meansthat you will have a system that is economical and good for the envi-ronment: you will not only reduce your CO2 emissions but will also cut your consumption of expensive electrical energy.

Required space on the roof

The size of a solar heating system depends on the hot water needs of the people using the system.Experience has shown that the average consumption of private hou-seholds is about 50 litres per person per day. This means that you will need flat plate collectors with a surface area of about 1 to 1.5 squaremetres or 0.8 to 1.2 square metres of vacuum tube collectors. Thedesign of the solar garden storage tank allows for one or two days without sunshine during the summer months. Therefore, the storage tank should have a storage capacity of up to twice the daily hot water con-sumption.
