			Stone Mosaics

		In ancient Mesopotamia craftsmen cut stone to create the tiny pieces of tesserae tliat made up the earliest mosaics. Those used on walls were sliaped and raised fractionally, to catch the ever changing quality of light and add beauty and interest to a surface tliat might otherwise be plain

		Cut and then softened by the action of'tumbling' amongst harder stones, the Venetian-style mosaics on these pages are still hand-set in the traditional ways of early craftsmen.
