l shipping and handling (within the U.S.) included in the net pricewater gilding which is very different from oil gilding, is centuries old and a very time consuming process. a gesso and bole base is prepared; there are six to eight layers of gesso, and then three to four layers of bole (which is a mixture of natural earth pigments and gelatin glue applied whilst warm). each layer of the gesso, and each layer of the bole is finely sanded, and then the last layer of bole is burnished. it is on to this surface that the fragile leaves of gold or silver are laid. once dry the surface can be burnished with an agate stone.
