L'importanza di essere utile. Non sono interessato agli oggetti che pretendono di cambiare o modellare il corso della vita, non credo che un oggetto possa nè debbafarlo. Sono, invece, interessato ad essere utile alla gente così come può esserlo un buon meccanico o un idraulico; mi piacerebbe moltoche il mio lavoro fosse tanto utile e magari indispensabile quanto il loro. Il design è qualcosa che va oltre l'esercizio stilistico, l'uso di unmateriale innovativo o l'introduzione di una composizione interessante. Design è risolvere i problemi offrendo soluzioni che aggiungano"valore" all'oggetto rendendolo universalmente comprensibile ed apprezzabile. Esso deve rispondere alla domanda "perchè?" con
chiarezza ed onestà e senza parole prive di significato o dettagli lontani dalla vita reale. In ultima analisi il buon design consiste nellachiarezza di pensieri e nel tradurli in una forma che abbia un fine nella nostra vita.Importance of being useful.I am not interested in objects that claim to change or shape our lives. I don't think that an object would be able or should do it. As adesigner, I am much more interested in being useful, like a good mechanic or a carpenter. And I would like my work to be as useful andperhaps as indispensable as their work. Design, for me, is more than just about interesting composition of style or use of new materials.It is still about solving problem, offering solutions that add "value" which can be understood and appreciated effortlessly by the users. It involves answering the question of "why?" with honesty and clarity and without meaningless words or details which have nothing to dowith the way we actually live. Good design ultimately is about this clarity of thoughts and how faithfully it is translated into a form thatserves a purpose in our lives. 36 ZIG ZAG 37
