An optimal interaction between the sub-base and the grass layer is essential. As a leader in the sector, Desso Sports Systems has developed a brand new system: A sub-base with a honeycomb structure that combines the stability of asphalt with the flexibility of a shock-absorbing layer. This innovative solution is known as TwinBase.

Stable and flexible

TwinBase is a unique & patented concept. It consists of a honeycomb structure, filled with clay pellets which creates a smooth, exceptionally stable sub-base that is also very flexible. This seemingly contradictory combination brings a wide range of applications

The highly stabilising effect is perfectly comparable with traditional, bound sub- bases so TwinBase can easily replace any type of sub-base. The new system is also ahead of the game in terms of quality. ISA, the Dutch testing laboratory that is accredited by FIH and FIFA, tested the TwinBase system extensively for shock absorption, vertical deformation, water permeability, the quality of the honeycomb structure, and the clay pellet filling. The system meets the FIH requirements and has been tested to FIFA** standards.

The last few months have been special for Desso Sports Systems in a number of ways. Thanks to the recent takeover by NPM Capital, Desso can make extra investment in the development and production of high-quality solutions, over the short, medium and long term. In my new role as the director of Desso Sports Systems, I see Desso working hard to bring to market new systems that will meet the needs of athletes and their clubs. An artificial grass field that uses TwinBase can be laid without special equipment, even in places that are difficult to reach. Installation is relatively easy and is therefore faster giving significant time savings. Tight deadlines and difficult weather conditions no longer result in delays during installation. In addition, the underlayer is made of environmentally friendly components and the material is recyclable.All of the playing characteristics provided by a conventional sub-base are retained, and drainage, even in heavy rains, is usually faster than it is with a traditional bound sub-base. The possibilities are also virtually unlimited in terms of sporting applications. TwinBase is suitable for both football and field hockey pitches. The Desso Sportilux SV surface (field hockey) and
2 (football) have been successfully installed on top of a TwinBase system.

World first

During the day, the field is used for recreational purposes, such as neighbourhood activities, childcare, and schools. In the evening, football club Haaglandia takes it over for their training.”
