Product catalog summary
Historic Value
Hemp fibre has been historically used for durable applications like ropes and sails due to its strength and resistance to mildew and weathering. Black Mountain NatuHemp utilizes this resilient fibre for insulation, offering moisture buffering, thermal regulation, and structural rigidity.
Carbon Footprint
Hemp locks away up to two tonnes of CO₂ per tonne of fibre during growth, making it a carbon-negative product. Black Mountain uses 90% less manufacturing energy compared to alternatives, and the product remains biodegradable or can be incinerated for energy at the end of its life.
Durability
Hemp fibres provide a semi-rigid structure resistant to slumping, maintaining energy efficiency over time. This makes it suitable for warm lofts and timber frame walls.
True Sustainability
Hemp is biodegradable, non-toxic, and requires minimal water and no herbicides, making it a sustainable crop. Black Mountain's insulation has a 95% natural fibre content, promoting maximum natural performance.
Greener Alternative
Black Mountain's UK factory is energy-efficient, and NatuHemp insulation is carbon negative, locking more carbon than produced during manufacturing.
Thermal Performance
With a thermal conductivity of 0.039 W/mK, hemp insulation retains heat and regulates thermal performance, keeping buildings warmer in winter and cooler in summer.
Moisture Permeability
Hemp can absorb up to 20% of its weight in moisture without losing thermal performance, acting as a moisture buffer and preventing structural damage.
Fire Standards
NatuHemp insulation is flame retardant with a Euro Class E rating, treated with non-toxic chemicals for fire safety.
Installation & Application
Safe to install without protective clothing, hemp insulation is easy to cut and fit, suitable for timber frames, lofts, rafters, walls, and floors. Black Mountain offers bespoke sizing to minimize waste and cost.
Performance & Technical Standards
Complies with thermal requirements in England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland. Fire rating: Euro Class E, Thermal Conductivity: 0.039 W/mK, Density: 30kg/m³, ODP: Zero, GWP: Zero.

Historic Value True Sustainability Hemp fibre has been used throughout history for durable applications such as ropes, sails and clothing. Even today, ships still use hemp in sails and rigging around the world due to its strength and natural resistance to mildew and weathering. Hemp fibre is a biodegradable, non-toxic fibre. The organic hemp fibres used at Black Mountain are derived from waste straw left at the end of the hemp seed harvest. Annually, the growth rate and versatility of this agricultural crop means that hemp insulation is truly sustainable and will flourish in diverse conditions....

Thermal Performance The thermal conductivity of hemp insulation is 0.039 W/mK. Low conductivity levels make hemp an excellent insulator. Natural insulation materials also have a higher thermal mass which enables them to not only retain heat but also regulate thermal performance for an optimum indoor environment. This allows buildings to stay warmer in winter and offers some protection against overheating in the summer; a unique attribute particularly relevant to buildings with warm lofts. Moisture Permeability Condensation is a fundamental problem facing many architects today. A lack of ‘breathability’...
