Backhausen, an Austrian enterprise of great tradition, was founded in 1849. It designs and manufactures high-quality upholstery and decorative modern fabrics, which are produced in Hoheneich in Austria's beautiful Waldviertel region. In 1850 Backhausen was awarded the gold medal at the London World Exhibition and in 1888 the company was commissioned as purveyors to the Austrian Imperial Court and titled “K. & K. Hoflieferant”. In 1970 Backhausen was awarded the Austrian Coat of Arms quality certificate. Backhausen was also one of the chief suppliers to the “Wiener Werkstätte” (1903–1932) and closely cooperated with the group's main representativessuch as Kolo Moser and Josef Hoffmann.An unique archive with over 3,500 original sketches by more than 300 artists from between 1860–1950 was established. This archive can be visited at the Wiener Werkstätte textiles museum in the Backhausen flagship store at Schwarzenbergstraße 10, Vienna.Based on these sketches and taking into account current trends, Backhausen continues to weave sophisticated, high-quality fabrics. The designs such as the“Wiener Werkstätte” and “Josef Hoffmann” collections are still very much in demand and blend in harmoniously with modern living spaces.
