pont à 5 voies qui attirait le regard,
mais la station de péage avec 9
cabines à encaissement, une voie
pour trafic intense et 2 voies express
pour automobilistes pressés. Une
véritable vague futuriste.
Le Dépar tement des Transpor t s
Californien (CalTrans) a repris le style
futuriste avec un bâtiment administratif
à 2 étages et 2 auvents. L’auvent large
recouvre le péage, le petit protège
l’entrée. Le design a été inspiré par la
topographie du détroit Carquinez et les
environs de Martinez.
Pour David Stow, architecte et responsable
projet, CalTrans, l’équipe design et
la ville de Martinez ont noté que la rivière
venait affleurer le rivage, créant des
formes arrondies et des baies découpées.
Pour marier ces formes et l’harmonie
des couleurs, station et auvents ont
été habillés en ALUCOBOND® cuivre
métallique et bleu-vert brillant.
La station remplace l’ancienne de 1962,
l’accès principal à la cité. Les éléments
arrondis traduisent mouvement et rapidité.
La forme de l’auvent s’inspire des poupes
de grands navires fréquentant la baie de
Sacramento. Quant aux couleurs, elles
s’harmonisent avec le blé doré de l’été
et le vert tendre et foncé du printemps
et de l’hiver.
Le bâtiment administratif parait n’avoir
qu’un seul étage, la partie inférieure étant
intégrée à la colline. Selon Stow : « Nous
avons prouvé que les responsables du
design interne sont capables du meilleur
en respectant à la fois l’environnement
et la ville de Martinez. »
It was the Benicia-Martinez toll plaza, which features nine staffed toll
booths, a high-occupancy vehicle lane and two FasTrak® Express lanes for
toll paying without taking the foot off the gas – a wave of the future. That
futuristic theme is repeated in the California Department of Transportation’s
(CalTrans) design of the $22 million toll plaza, which includes a two-story
administration building and two canopies. The larger canopy covers the toll
booth area while the smaller one shields the building entrance. The design
was inspired by the topographical outline of the Carquinez Strait and the
surroundings of Martinez. David Stow, senior architect and project lead,
CalTrans, said the design team and the City of Martinez noticed how the
“river gently meets the edges of the land, developing curvilinear areas with
carved out coves.” To incorporate the unique forms and the color scheme
Alucobond ® in Copper metallic and in Shimmering teal was used to clad
the building walls and canopies. The new toll plaza was designed to replace
an original one built in 1962. “This was the gateway to the city of Martinez”,
said Stow. The curving linear elements in the design communicate movement
and speed. The form of the canopy was inspired by the sterns of large
ships on their way from the Bay to Sacramento. The colors match the shift
from the golden-brown wheat colors of summer and fall to the soft, deep
green of the winter and spring months. The two-story administration building
is unique. It appears to be one story because the lower floor is carved
into the hillside. “We were able to demonstrate the ability of the in-house
design staff to perform well by being responsive to both the environment
and the City of Martinez”, said Stow.

Als die neue Benicia-Martinez Brücke
eröffnet wurde fand nicht die fünfspurige
Brücke die meiste Beachtung,
sondern die Mautstation. Sie hat neun
Zahlstationen und zwei FasTrak® Spuren
für die Bezahlung der Maut im Durchfahren
– ein Weg in die Zukunft.
Die Zukunft wird auch beim Design der
22 Mio. $ teuren Mautstation des California
Department of Transportation thematisiert.
Sie besteht aus einem zweigeschossigen
Verwaltungsgebäude sowie zwei Vordächern
– das größere überspannt den
Mautbereich, das kleinere den Eingang.
Inspiration bot die Topografie der Carquinez
Meerenge und der Gegend um Martinez.
David Stow, leitender Architekt bei Cal-
Trans, erläutert: „Der Fluss trifft sanft
auf die kantige Küste, verläuft gebogen
und formt Buchten“. Um die einmaligen
Formen und Farben zu reflektieren,
wurde ALUCOBOND® in Kupfermetallic
und Smaragdgrün für die Bekleidung
verwendet. Die neue Mautstation ersetzt
die alte aus dem Jahr 1962. „Das ist das
Tor zur Stadt Martinez“, erklärt Stow.
Die gebogenen Elemente vermitteln
Bewegung und Geschwindigkeit. Die
Dächer erinnern an das Heck der großen
Schiffe auf ihrem Weg von der Bucht nach
Sacramento. Die Farben kongruieren mit
dem goldbraunen Weizen im Sommer und
Herbst sowie dem weichen Grasgrün im
Winter und Frühjahr. Das zweistöckige
Verwaltungsgebäude scheint nur eingeschossig
zu sein – das Untergeschoss ist
in die Hügellandschaft integriert. „Wir
konnten das Design in Einklang mit der
Landschaft und der Stadt von Martinez
bringen“, führt Stow aus.
